Wimbledon College of Arts

Project Description

Here are some of the costumes I have made during my time at Wimbledon College of Arts for which I graduated with a First Class BA hons in 2019.

Third Year

Ondine

My final self directed project was to create a design by Giusy Coviello, Ondine. I had the opportunity to work with her directly on this, which was amazing. Final photos still have not been shot, however here is an impression.

The Seamstress Erté – Der Rosenkavelier

For our second official project, we got to choose a design from Der Rosenkavelier designed by Erté, which was staged at Glyndebourne. I chose ‘Faninal’s Seamstress’ as it was a very colourful design with not too much decoration after my first choice. The main fabric is a hand dyed wool sateen with silk ghazar apron & bows and cotton sateen collar & cuffs. I also designed and 3D printed the pin cushion and shoe buckles.

Real Lives Project – Habit à la Française

My first project was meant to be based on a real life person. Because of my Dutch heritage, I really wanted to create something worn by a Dutch person. I also wanted to focus on menswear. Since I love decorations and emblesishment, I choose to make a Habit à la Française from 1790, which was worn by Otto Baron van Randwijck. More more photos click here.

National Gallery – Lorenzo Lotto

National Gallery – Lorenzo Lotto exhibition in collaboration with ALRA. Our actor was Jack Gates.
We had the opportunity to bring a painting to life for a live event at the National Gallery. I worked together with Colette Robinson to create this painting of Friar Angelo Ferreti as Saint Peter Martyr, painted by Lotto in 1549. We made the prop dagger and cleaver but we could not have a cleaver in his head due to safety, therefore we hang it of his belt.

Second Year

Ballet Project

For our second big project we were paired up with a designer and had to collaborate on a dance costume. The costumes were going to be used by dance students from Legat Ballet School. Elsa Anderson and I chose to make a tutu for the Pas De Deux ‘Blue Bird’ from the piece Sleeping Beauty. She is a princess who was locked up in a tower and got visited by a prince who was turned into a blue bird. He gave her jewels, hence the large amount of crystals on the tutu.

Elizabethan Costume

This costume was our first big costume. We had to create an Elizabethan costume from a given design, which all included an animal mask as well, mine was a porcupine. I incorporated laser engraving on the corset busk and made a mask with plastazote and laser engraved & cut veg tan leather which were both new materials to me as well. Some of the techniques I have used are screen printing (partlet and sleeve puffs), dyeing (petticoat and binding on corset, ruff lace), beading and cartridge pleating for the skirt.
